I pride myself on usually having the necessary ingredients in my pantry or fridge to whip up a fabulous meal without having to go to the store. We keep meat in the chest freezer, I have a ton of canned goods and I keep a variety of pasta shapes in my pantry to handle any sauce I throw at it. I try to be prepared so that when the kids are being impossible, or I’m stuck in nap jail again I don’t have to drag them out to the store to get something that I don’t have. But buttermilk. Yeah, not something that I usually have on hand, so when I need to use it for a recipe I either end up with more than what I need and it goes bad, or I don’t have any.
But then in steps my mother, the cooking guru who taught me to cook from the pages of Bon Appetit and lets me know that there is a solution to my buttermilk problem.
You can make buttermilk at home.
Hello game changer!! It’s totally easy and all you need are the following ingredients –
1 Tb Vinegar or Lemon Juice
Put the TB of lemon juice or vinegar in a measuring cup, then fill the cup up with milk until it reaches the 1 Cup mark.
I mean, was that easy or WHAT?! It will have all the flavor and tang of real buttermilk, without having to actually shake heavy cream until it makes butter and butter milk… or without you having to go to the store to get it. Whatever you would normally do.
Now you can make those buttermilk pancakes, biscuits, or fried chicken that you’ve been dying to make but can’t because *facepalm* you forgot to get the buttermilk from the store!
And now that you’ve made yourself some buttermilk, how about making some cheesy soda bread?
