As I look forward to having another baby in a few weeks (holy crap FOR REALZ??), I remember what it was like to have the first Kidlet. I was kind of a basket-case to be honest. I had little to no experience with kids and really had little to no experience taking care of anything other than myself. And seriously, if you knew me during my early 20’s in Los Angeles, you KNOW I wasn’t so good at that. For real people, house PLANTS were in danger with me around.
But then I had him and that all kind of changed. The maternal instinct kicked in, I read a few books when I felt totally overwhelmed, I DID NOT ask my mother for her thoughts/opinions and we managed to survive the beginning and all the madness of having a newborn. In fact, looking back on it, I feel pretty good about the choices that we made when it came to being first time parents. I stayed at home, so it gave me the option to make my own baby food, watch labels, start cloth diapering, and try to make better choices about products that we were using in our house.
Moving up here to my Green Acres REALLY changed the way that I thought. You’ve heard me talk about the changes that we made as a family, but looking from then until now, I can see how far we’ve really come with our green/eco friendly lifestyle choices. Hell, we have 3 chickens in our backyard and I had a full vegetable garden this year that did not die. Houseplants REJOICE!
One thing that I’ve tried to be really conscious of are the chemicals that we bring into our house. I know that we are exposed to SO many things in this world that we can’t control, so I figure my house can be the one place where I do. Yes, I’m a control freak when it comes to my family, so sue me. But finding companies that are truly green and looking out for you can be hard… If you have any doubt of that check out the list of the companies that did NOT want to label GMO’s. Good lord.
But off the soap box.
Seriously though, it can feel impossible. And we parents only have the time and energy to try so hard before we give up and think, well it can’t be that bad, right?? So I was excited when The Honest Company started up. And even more excited when I read that they wanted to not only create a company that was kid/earth/everyone-friendly, but also unquestionably safe, beautiful, convenient, and affordable. Because you totally had me at affordable. And you had me again at convenient… since you don’t even have to go to the STORE to buy their products. And we aren’t just talking soaps and cleaners, we are talking diapers and wipes and sunscreen and lotion and laundry detergent and a list that goes on and on and on. Oh and did I mention beautiful? They have the likes of Alexander McQueen designing for them. YES PLEASE.
I mean, look at these damn diapers. THEY ARE SUPER CUTE. And if flowers or pink cuteness aren’t your thing? The come in manly patterns like pirates or plaid check. Because being green does NOT mean looking shabby. And now that I’m having a girl? I think I think I need to ramp up my fabulousness a little bit.
But even BETTER than all of THAT? They will deliver them to your house every month if you need them, like clockwork, so you don’t even need to think about it. Because trust me, as a parent, I can attest to that sinking HOLYCRAPTHEREARENODIAPERS feeling at 3am.
I love the convenience factor. I love the fact that they KNOW that you are going to be looking at prices and whether or not their new-fangled ideas of keeping chemicals out of your home is going to cost you a ton of money. I love that the design is gorgeous and isn’t something I don’t want lying around. I also love that it will show up on my doorstep without even thinking about it. Because even though I’m anal about going green? I’m also kind of lazy.
