Guys – it’s been a shitty week. A totally awful shitty week.
Our impromptu trip to San Diego wasn’t for fun, wasn’t for laughs. It was to celebrate the life of an amazing friend. A person who touched my life and my family’s life inexplicably. We gathered on a grey San Diego morning to mourn and to remember. To remember what a rich full life he had, what a wonderful family he was surrounded by. A wife, his children, his grandchildren. A life cut too short at 69 years, but still rich with the years that it did have.
And while I waited in the car for the service to begin I was notified by the buzzing of the phone that yet another life had been snatched away. Another shock and too soon. A young man, a husband, a father… only 34 years old. With small children. With a wife who mourns his passing with every fiber of her being. With a whole community who mourns the loss of his smile, his humor, his love.
Cancer is a bitch. She comes in and grabs those we love. She doesn’t care that we beg, plead for them not to go. She takes them anyway and we are left behind. To grieve, to mourn, to shout at the top of our lungs that it’s not fair, too soon, we can’t do it alone.
Cancer sucks.
But we aren’t always alone. And in the darkest moments comes the greatest light, the light of a thousand candles being lit in our honor. Of people standing up to support, to love, to help.
We are standing up. For her, for her family, for the unfathomable loss that they have to bear. For all the families that lose loved ones to this bitch of a disease.
Cancer can suck it.

We have set up a fund in honor of Scott and his amazing legacy as a father and husband, to help support his family with the immense medical bills left in the wake of his illness. Courtney, the blogger at Our Small Moments never asked us to do anything, but we want to help any way that we can to alleviate even a modicum of her struggle. Anything you can give is appreciated, even if it’s just love and prayers as we try and raise $25,000 to cover the cost of their bills.
