Date – a social or romantic appointment or engagement.
9 years ago, in the midst of our courtship, or rather when my husband was woo-ing me (his words not mine), we saw movies on a fairly regular basis. We went out for dinners, had friends over, took trips (last minute trip to Germany anyone?) and actually “dated”.
Two kids and five chickens later, date isn’t a word that is in our vocabulary that much anymore. With a crazy schedule and a veritable DEARTH of babysitters in our town, there’s never an opportunity for any exciting last minute dinners out or trips to the movies. Usually a “date” for us is putting the kids to bed, opening a bottle of wine and watching Homeland. Not bad, but sometimes you just need to get out of your jammies and be seen in public… together… like you actually exist as a couple.
But logistically, how was this going to happen? Our old babysitter moved away and we couldn’t call my MIL to drive 45 minutes so we could go to a movie or grab a drink?
UrbanSitter, the Saver of Date Night.
I was given the opportunity to try out UrbanSitter for a month (which you can too below!) and immediately knew I needed to book someone so the Hubs and I could attend a party together. It was SUPER easy and I used both the website and the app for my iPhone to start looking through the gazillions of sitters in my area. I was shocked at how many there were because when I say dearth of sitters? I mean, people would cut a b***** to find and keep their sitter around here.
I entered my date and times and voila, there was my list of available sitters. I requested one and sent about 3 back-up requests and within 45 minutes I had a sitter confirmed. As the Big Kid would say, Easy Cheesy Lemon Squeezy.
This was about a week in advance so I was confident as we headed towards our big weekend date night that things were going to go swimmingly. Imagine my surprise though when my sitter canceled the day before (she was well within her 24 hour window) because of the damn stomach flu that’s been going around. I was slightly panicked because in the past, when the sitter cancels? Your date night is done. Because where the h*** are you going to find a sitter the day before? (Remember, dearth of sitters and cutting of people…)
I just hopped on UrbanSitter and searched my date and time (omg 24 hours away) and within 15 minutes I had another awesome sitter booked. It was CRAZY how easy it was. And with the app, I got reminders that my sitter was coming (like I was going to forget date-night) and once the night was over, the next day I paid her with the touch of a button. A BUTTON PEOPLE.
WHEN DID BABYSITTERS START TAKING CREDIT CARDS???
It really was the easiest thing I’ve used in a long long time… and with these two hooligans
I’m going to be calling UrbanSitter again and again… because I LOVED the sitter that we had and because Mommy is feeling the need to go grocery shopping alone, or maybe go see a movie by myself. Or maybe just sit in a parking lot and read a book.
Because alone time, yo.
